You know I think one of the things that makes Attack on Titan such a heart wrenchingly painful anime is the realism to the situation the characters are thrown into. It’s not like most anime where every major character that dies gets an epic death with a goodbye speech and a final battle. The characters in attack on titan die so suddenly, some don’t even see it coming. Squad Levi, one of the most elite teams, was kicking ass and the fight turned around in a second wiping them all out, and they were scared. Hell, Marco didn’t even die on screen, no one saw him die. The reality to it is that they are fighting a war that seems hopeless and when they are out there fighting the Titans they know it. It’s probably the way the characters react to their situation that gets to me the most, like Sasha crying that she’s afraid, Jean wondering when he will die in battle, or Connie’s survivor guilt. They are all so human and I find that incredibly sad and amazing.
